Ways to Organize Your Storage Unit Using Supplies You Probably Own

July 29, 2016 in Storage Blog

When it comes to organization, your storage unit is probably your last priority. However, keeping your storage unit organized and tidy can make a world of a difference. While packing up items for your storage unit, consider labeling and sorting storage items by category. Having an organized storage unit can help you find items quicker, and manage your items more efficiently.

Being organized doesn’t mean that you need to drop a bunch of money on supplies. You’d be surprised how many items you already have can help you stay organized. Below are common household items to utilize when freeing up space in your home.

Group and Label Items

If you are storing a wide variety of items, group together similar items and then try to pack those together. Labeling your storage boxes can help while unloading items into your storage unit, and also allow you to quickly identify what box you need when you visit your storage unit in the future. Simply use a sharpie and write on the outside of your box to label them.

Utilize Clothing Racks

Clothing racks are a great way to maximize space in your closet. If you have a smaller or narrow closet, having additional space for your clothing or shoes can be a major help. A popular home decor trend has been on the rise to set a clothing rack in a corner of your bedroom and hang up your favorite clothing pieces, shoes, and purses.

Repurpose Storage Crates

If you have spare crates laying around the house such as wooden crates or milk crates, they are perfect to use for storage. As crates are easily stackable, you can fit multiple in a small space, and store a variety of items. Additionally, with built-in handles, crates are easy to transport or move.

Clear Out Plastic Totes

Plastic boxes or totes are a great resource during a move. As plastic boxes are stackable, they are easy to store and pull out when you need them. Plastic totes are durable, and can last longer than other boxes too. Plastic boxes also come in a wide variety of sizes, so depending on the size of your storage unit, you can find the right size of tote that would be right for you. For example, you can select a long skinny one with wheels, or a normal sized tote that is more narrow for heavier items.

Reuse Cardboard Boxes

Cardboard boxes are convenient to use while moving, as they are easy to assemble and disassemble. For the most part, cardboard boxes are affordable too. While cardboard boxes aren’t expensive, they are easy to store and keep for the next move. However, when storing cardboard boxes, be sure to keep them off the ground while storing. Keeping cardboard boxes on the ground or up against a wall can attract insects and moisture.

Reorganize Shelving Units

If you have a spare shelf unit that you previously used to store dry goods or to maximize closet space, it can work perfectly in a storage unit. Whether you have a wire or wooden shelving unit, both are ideal for keeping boxes and other items organized. Plus, keeping cardboard boxes off the floor of your storage unit can help prevent possible moisture or water damage.

Utilize Blankets or Sheets to Wrap Furniture

It is important to wrap your furniture to not only protect the furniture during the move, but also keep your items protected while they are in storage. Items such as glass, wood, and mattresses are especially sensitive to potential damage during a move or in storage.

Luckily, you can wrap furniture with blankets or towels that you already have to protect them. In addition to wrapping the furniture itself, it’s essential to also lay down a layer of padding or sheets on the floor to protect your furniture from moisture and other elements. However, avoid using plastic covers to wrap furniture, as they can create condensation and cause water damage.
