How to Choose a Storage Unit Lock

After you’ve selected your storage unit and prepared your items to move in, one of the most important steps you need to take is selecting a lock to keep your items secure while you’re not around. Thankfully, the storage experts at Absolute Storage Management are experienced in the area of storage unit locks so you can rest assured knowing your items have a high level of protection while you’re away.

Combination Lock

One of the most common options for locks is a combination lock. If you’ve ever had a high school locker or gym locker, you’re likely familiar with this type of lock. It requires a code or combination of letters to unlock and then a slight tug to open it.

With some locks you’ll have the option to choose your own code, others will come preset with a sticker on the bottom with the numbers. Be sure to remove this sticker and keep the code safe before you put your lock to use. Always scramble the numbers or twist the dial several times when you lock your unit up after visiting.

Keyed Padlocks

If you’re looking for an easy and affordable option, padlocks with keys are a great route to go. These locks don’t require you to remember or set a combination and instead use a key to unlock and pop them open. When you leave your unit, simply squeeze the metal shackle back into place until it clicks. Padlocks can be preferable because you won’t need to worry about forgetting your combination. You will, however, need to remember to grab your key. We recommend attaching it to a bright keychain and keeping it in an easy to see location in your home or office so you won’t forget it on your way out the door.

Disc Lock

Disc locks are some of the most common locks that are used for storage units and storage lockers. The disc lock is essentially a round padlock that uses a short shackle to hug the latch on your unit. Arguably the most popular type of lock for storage units, the shape of disc locks makes them difficult to tamper with and cut off. However, you will need to remember to bring your key each time you stop by.

SmartLocks

Select properties in the Absolute Storage Management network utilize bluetooth locks or electronic smart locks such as the Noke Smart Entry System by Janus. Rather than an external lock that can be removed from your storage unit’s door, these locks are affixed to roll-up and swing doors and are unlocked using your smartphone. This is a great option if you don’t want to memorize a combination or remember to bring a key with you each time you visit your unit. Some smart locks even allow you to grant temporary access to a friend or family member should they need to grab something from the unit when you’re not around.

Not all properties are equipped with smart lock technology, so be sure to contact your nearest facility to learn more.
