Self storage units are a great way to free up space in your home by moving items you don’t need on a regular basis out of your home or office. Whether it’s holiday decorations, hard copies of business records, or just everyday clutter, you can get a lot of space back from your storage units. No matter what you place in your storage unit, making an organized floor plan of your storage unit to remind you of where everything is a great tool to have.

This helpful guide from the experts at Absolute Storage Management provides helpful practices to assist in creating your storage unit map.

Getting Organized

The first steps to creating a useful floor plan start before you even load your storage unit. Before you begin, you should organize your belongings by how often you need to access them. If there are items you need on a regular basis, they should be kept closer to the door for ease of access. Once you have a general  idea of which things should be closer to the front and back, you can start moving into your storage unit.

An important thing to remember is that you should start making your map during the move-in process. If you don’t keep track of which items are where, especially in larger units, you may run into trouble when you start labeling your map. Make a key for your map during the process so you can keep track of which of your belongings are grouped or stacked together.

Laying Out Your Map Design

Once your storage unit is all packed in, you can start making the unit map. Sketch out a rectangular space roughly the shape of your unit, then mark rectangular spaces where each of your stacks of belongings are. Once all the groups are sketched out, mark each of them with a number. Off to the side or on another sheet of paper, create a list of each large item or the general types of items in each numbered group. With this, you should be able to easily look up where to search for the item you’re looking for when you return. Be sure that you label a reference point, such as the door, so you know how to read your map even if you revisit it months later. With all of that accomplished, your map should be ready to go!
